Bangladesh – On the 75th anniversary of the universal declaration of human rights, 350.org Bangladesh launched Dirty Development, a film on the Matarbari coal-fired power plant, which has been mired in controversy and risks of environmental devastation since its construction.
The 20-minute film highlights the struggles of surrounding communities, who lost their land and livelihoods due to the construction and operation of the Japan-funded coal plant project in Matarbari, Bangladesh. It also provides recommendations for a way beyond coal-powered energy with a roadmap for responsible energy finance from Japan.
The film launch coincides with International Human Rights Day, spotlighting the loss of livelihoods, land and a right to a safe and livable future brought on by the fossil fuel industry.
Farzana Faruk Jhumu, Associate Coordinator for 350.org Bangladesh says,
“While much of the world is focusing on a just and equitable transition, the Matarbari Coal power plant is doing the opposite. With an improper assessment report, destroying the Kuhlia river and the people’s livelihood, this Japanese-invested coal power plant is doing more harm than good. This film will show the real scenario of coal.”
Abdul Jabbar, a farmer from Matarbari says,
“I used to cultivate salt during the dry session, and during the monsoon session, I did fish farming. Suddenly the (Matarbari) project acquired everything, and we lost our business and our ancestors’ land.”
Eri Watanabe, 350.org Japan says,
“JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) must ensure appropriate remedies for the affected communities of Matarbari phase 1 who have already suffered from loss of livelihood, resettlement, and other environmental damages caused by the project. We’ve seen that the Japanese government and JICA canceled Matarbari phase 2, but its conversion into gas plants sourced by imported LNG won’t solve the climate crisis nor economic burden of people of Bangladesh. Japan must support community-based renewable energy if they are serious about supporting a just transition for the people of Bangladesh.”
